Three categories are often confused, and it is worth separating them:
- 925 sterling silver, a genuine alloy, marked "925". This is the material every Loretana earring is made from.
- Silver-plated jewellery, a base of cheaper metal (usually brass) covered with a thin layer of silver. After a few months of wear the layer rubs through.
- Silver-tone jewellery, a marketing term and nothing more. There is no silver in these pieces at all.

- Weight. Genuine sterling silver has a denser, heavier feel in the hand than cheap alloys. It feels solid rather than hollow.

Most skin reactions to jewellery are caused not by silver itself but by nickel. Cheaper pieces often contain nickel traces that cause redness, itching, and sometimes even blistering.
